During the long Oregon winters, keeping your home warm is of utmost importance. Have you ever wondered how your heating system works to keep you comfortable? A basic understanding of its operation will help ensure that you’ll be able to properly maintain it and recognize when something is amiss. If you’re new to the world of heating systems, the staff at Stan’s Heating, Inc would like to offer a few insights into their operation.

Creating Heat

The first step in keeping you comfortable is creating heat to warm the air. For a majority of furnaces, this means using a burner to create a flame fueled by natural gas. Other types of furnaces use one or more electric coils to slow down the flow of electricity and create heat. No matter how the heat is created, it then has to be used to heat the air flowing past it.

Transferring Heat

Depending on the type of furnace you have, heat transfer is accomplished in one of two ways. In a gas furnace, the flame from the burner is used to raise the temperature of a heat exchanger. This is a series of tubes that slows down the flow of heat so that the air can increase in temperature as it moves through the device.

In an electric furnace, a more direct method is used to heat the air. A blower fan moves the air overheated electric coils, thus increasing the air’s temperature. Since the coils are in line with the ductwork, no further heating processes are required.

Another Option

If you want another option for heating your home, you can choose a heat pump. A heat pump uses refrigerant to transfer heat from outside your home to the inside. Since heat is only being moved instead of created, this type of system is much more efficient.
